On the road to COP30, we share two documents that bring together key messages from communities facing the impacts of wildfires in the Amazon and Pantanal. These materials are intended to serve as a guide for anyone attending COP-related events or discussions, providing clear messages and figures derived from the workshop held in Brasília in September and the associated research project.
The central messages put forward by communities in Brazil are:
- Recognise the drivers and impacts of wildfires within the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.
- Develop long-term funding for the Fund, along with community-adapted rapid dispersal modalities.
- Prioritise early investment in community-based fire management, including support for community fire brigades.
- Strengthen Indigenous-led fire stewardship, ensuring Indigenous leadership and knowledge are integrated into the Fund’s governance and operational modalities.
- Encourage countries to submit fire-related funding proposals under the Barbados Implementation Modalities, to demonstrate the Fund’s potential to address wildfire-related loss and damage.
These messages are based on the workshop “Climate Evidence for Loss & Damage in the Context of Wildfires in the Amazon and Pantanal Regions”, held in Brasília in September 2025. The document reflects the experiences and perspectives of community and Indigenous brigades such as the Alter brigade (Alter do Chão), the Indigenous brigade of Capoto/Jarina, the Guardiões Kumaruara brigade, and the voluntary Guardiões da Cafuringa brigade.
The documents also include a resource section with photographs and quotations illustrating the impact of climate change on fire regimes.
